BREAKING THE SCIENCE BARRIER
Chapter 1. Studying Science in College Introductory courses are meant to give you the basics, but there is a tremendous volume of basics to learn. Sciences are dynamic, changing all the time at their frontiers. Until 30 years ago the velocity required to escape the earth's gravitational pull (11 kilometers per second) was just a theoretical calculation. Before the era of space travel, escape velocity was used only to explain how we gradually lose molecules of our atmosphere. Of the total number of PhDs in science and engineering now being awarded annually, only 41 percent are earned by US citizens. In the current work force (115.5 million people), 47 percent are white males, 36 percent are white females, and 17 percent are nonwhites of both sexes. If you are a female or a member of a minority group, you are likely to be heavily recruited and enthusiastically welcomed if you major in science. Do you like foreign languages? Science is such an international enterprise that the scientist or engineer who knows Russian or Japanese, for example, has a wider selection of collaborators... Do you like to travel? yourself getting suited or dressed up every morning? Do you like
working with your hands or mostly with your mind? Do you like
being indoors or out? Do you like to talk? Teach? Think? Draw?... |
