BREAKING THE SCIENCE BARRIER
How to Explore and Understand the Sciences

Chapter 5. What's Ahead in Science?

An expanding area of chemistry is the synthesis of whole new classes of molecules, some of which will be used in medical applications, to prevent environmental degradation (such as finding substitutes for CFCs), or for environmental cleanup. These new molecules will depend on, and contribute to, a better understanding of chemical processes.

Although interplanetary missions virtually guarantee dramatic, usually photogenic, increases in our knowledge, much excitement is still being generated by earth-based technology. For example, our increasing computing ability makes it possible to construct more and more realistic models of complicated systems, such as the solar nebula, colliding planets, and planetary atmospheres.

With all the science that is left to do, there should be something for you to do in science. Although we celebrate the enormous achievements in the various fields of science and look forward to even more in the decades ahead, we cannot end this book without a cautionary note. It is important to realize the distinction between pure science–the search for knowledge about nature–and the uses to which human beings put that knowledge.

Who decides what science will be done, who pays, who benefits, and who participates? Scientists must take responsibility for the discoveries they make and for the uses...
