good grades in math

Do you have blocks to achieving good grades in math? Looking for a math course? Sheila Tobias first wrote Overcoming Math Anxiety in 1978. In her updated version, she expands her analysis of the attitude and approach variables that interfere with students' performance. Tobias found three significant variables in her subjects' inability to do college-level mathematics: fear of mathematics, the conviction that mathematics is a white male domain, and the conviction that one is either good in mathematics or in language arts but never both. In her books and lectures, Sheila Tobias shows how to master mathematics without anxiety.

Math Anxiety

Her second book, Succeed with Math, tells teachers and students (college age and older) how to master mathematics without anxiety. Succeed with Math is a practical guide that enables you to conquer math anxiety. Succeed with Math offers a broad range of methods for getting comfortable with math, including guidelines for solving problems even when you don't know how to begin. She provides invaluable advice and techniques for becoming proficient in math.

If we can control our anxiety by recognizing its symptoms and coping with them, we can go far. How far do we want to go? Not far enough to become engineers or mathematicians, perhaps. But surely far enough so that our fear of math no longer makes decisions for us.
