OVERCOMING MATH ANXIETY Chapter 1. The Primacy of Mathematics, Mastery of high-school algebra alone will make the difference between a low score and a high score on most standardized entry-level tests for civil service, federal service, industry, and the armed services. And a higher score, even when jobs are scarce, means a higher entry job and the chance to be ear-marked for on-the-job training. Frances Rosamond of National University, among others, estimates that starting salaries go up $2000 per year for every mathematics course taken after the ninth grade. To some extent, mathematics has always played a role in our working lives, particularly at the higher occupational levels. The news is that math is increasingly pervasive and also that these occupational levels are beginning to be reached by different people. By the time we are adults, we are pretty smart in our special
fields but feel rather dumb when we move outside our comfort zone.
