The aim of this chapter is to help you discover some problem-solving strategies based on the kind of improvising you use in solving puzzles–an approach you may not have thought of applying to mathematics before.

What makes for good problem solving? Knowledge of mathematics of course, but also patience, persistence, and experience. It may seem to the beginner that math teachers (or experts) are just pulling next steps out of the air when, in fact, ideas are coming from all of their past experience and close scrutiny of the problem.
