Chapter 6. Equalities and Inequalities

Algebra represents a great leap forward in mathematical abstraction. This may not be immediately obvious because, in the beginning, you continue to do algebra arithmetically simply using x and y as unknowns. Take the following example:

You have a certain amount of money. You triple that amount and then your aunt gives you $5 more. If you end up with $65, how much money did you start with?

If you were to proceed by representing the initial sum of money with the symbol x and then writing a mathematical statement (an equation) involving x that will lead you logically to an answer, you will have taken the first step across the divide that separates algebra from arithmetic:

3x + $5 = $65
3x = $65 - $5
3x = $60
x = $20
