In college you are responsible for knowing not only the conclusions of social research but how to derive and evaluate them as well. To do this, you will have to master social-science research methods that are based largely on the mathematical principles of probability and statistics.

If you are going to take a college calculus course (and it is wise to do that as early as possible), try to schedule it before you study statistics. If you take a course in statistics and probability first, many of the concepts and much of the notation will seem forbidding. Once you know calculus, however, all of this will be comfortably familiar.

A good solid grounding in statistics and probability opens up career and personal options that would otherwise remain closed. Best of all, these disciplines lend precision to your thinking and give you a powerful tool...
